Sousa Personal Property Policy
Every student at Sousa is provided either a locker or a cubby for storage of coats, book bags, and other personal effects. Since none of these receptacles are lockable, it is strongly suggested that money, watches, or any other personal property of value not be left in the lockers/cubbies. It is also advisable that student items be clearly marked with their names.
Students may bring soft balls (tennis, Spaulding, etc.) if they are clearly marked with the child’s name and used only during outdoor recess. We discourage bringing toys or trading cards which, again, cannot be secured. Should students choose to bring the former items, they may only be taken out during their half hour recess—never during class time or lunch.
Electronics Policy
Students are not permitted to have cell phones, Smartwatches, handheld games or electronic devices of any kind in school which are not provided by the district.
Over the last few years, we have seen an uptick in students in 4th and 5th grade bringing cell phones and smartwatches to school. These devices are causing academic and social implications including:
- high levels of distraction throughout the day
- communicating with peers during academic lessons
- Sharing of answers
- texting peers from the restroom
- texting unkind messages at recess
- students receiving texts and communication from peers outside of school
- communicating with parents during the school day
- playing games on their watches during lessons
- and more…
Electronic devices should be left at home. It is our hope that together we can help our students understand the importance of remaining focused on learning during the school day both academically and socially.
Lost and Found
There are two areas designated for the display of “lost and found” articles:
- Cafeteria- clothing items (jackets, hats, gloves, etc.)
- Main Office- smaller and/or more valuable items (glasses, keys, pens, etc.)
- The Sousa Home and School Association generally displays all unclaimed items at various HSA events throughout the year to try and match items with the students to whom they belong!
- If you have any questions about a lost item, please call the main office at Sousa at 767-5351.
