Welcome to the RULER Corner

Sousa Strong
Social and emotional learning are an important part of each child’s education at school, as is the idea of each individual being part of a larger Sousa “family”. Our school-wide theme, SOUSA STRONG, asks students to be kind, confident, and compassionate at all times. To tie into our SOUSA STRONG theme, the entire school staff has implemented the RULER philosophy which helps students Recognize, Understand, Label, Express, and Regulate their feelings and how such knowledge can help them interact in more positive ways with each other and the adults in the building.
Early in September of each year, Mrs. Sheehan and Mrs. Podell meet with every student to review basic expectations for being a Sousa Strong member of the school community in a school wide assembly. The assembly focuses on what it means to be Sousa Strong, our school Charter and our what it means to be a Charter Champion.
Sousa School Charter
At Sousa adults and students want to feel:
Respected, Included, Appreciated, Proud and Excited.
- To feel Respected we will treat others the way we want to be treated.
- To feel Included we will welcome all students and adults in our daily Sousa life.
- To feel Appreciated we will recognize that everyone at Sousa is unique and has special gifts to offer.
- To feel Proud we will put forth our best efforts in our everyday work.
- To feel Excited we will be our best selves when we are learning and playing.
Our school Charter follows us to all areas of the building. A general overview of specific expectations for common areas are outlined below.
